Chocolate Mousse.

You know you’re in for a great post when you read the words chocolate mousse! Am I right?
We had some guests over for dinner last night, and the first thing I always think of when having guests over or even going out to eat is what will I have for dessert. Yes, it’s true, I’m a sucker for sweet things!
Anyhoo I’ve been playing around with the idea of trying out a recipe I came across a while ago but just haven’t had the opportunity to do so. So this was the perfect occassion to make it.

Here’s the recipe, so you all can try it out:

Instant Chocolate Mousse – Courtesy of Nigella Lawson.

  • 150g mini marshmallows
  • 50g soft butter
  • 250g good dark chocolate (minimum 70% cocoa solids), chopped into small pieces
  • 60ml hot water from a recently boiled kettle
  • 1 x 284ml tub double cream
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Method

  1. Put the marshmallows, butter, chocolate and water in a heavy-based saucepan.
  2. Put the saucepan on the hob, over heat, though keep it fairly gentle, to melt the contents, stirring every now and again. Remove from the heat.
  3. Meanwhile, whip the cream with the vanilla extract until thick, and then fold into the cooling chocolate mixture until you have a smooth, cohesive mixture.
  4. Pour or scrape into 4 glasses or ramekins, about 175ml each in capacity, or 6 smaller (125ml) ones, and chill until you want to eat. The sooner the better!

Serves 4 – 6.

When going to buy the ingredients, I could not find “a good dark chocolate” as Nigella suggests you use. So I got what was available which I’m ashamed to say was not the best quality of dark chocolate as it was sweetened a bit too much. But the mousse came out delicious anyway. So just a note that if you can’t find the chocolate or don’t appreciate dark chocolate, it will taste as good with any other substitute.
Also as far as I know and have seen here in Zimbabwe, I have not come across mini marshmallows, so I bought the regular large ones and chopped them up to make for easy and quicker melting.

And some pictures that will get you motivated to make this!

Chopped up.

Melted chocolate, marshmallows, butter, and water.

Whipped cream with vanila essence.

And there you go! 🙂

Life’s just better with 100’s and 1000’s! 😀
